NEALE, George James

No.10541465, Corporal, George James NEALE
Aged 36

Royal Army Ordnance Corps
Died of his Wounds on Sunday 4th October 1942

George James Neale was born in 1906 in Burwell (Newmarket Q4-1906 3B:455), son of George and Maggie NEALE (née SAUNDERS), of Burwell.

1911 census...Aged 4, he was "near the Fox Inn", Burwell with his mother Maggie [29] and sister Dorothy [3], both born in Burwell. His father has not been found in the census.

On 16th January 1934 in Kingston, Cambs (CaxtonQ1-1934 3B:789)), he married Agnes Rever WAYMAN.

In the 1939 register, Agnes [8-3-1901] was at 310 Homeward, Swaffham Road, Burwell with here brother and sister in law, Bertie J.EALE [18-10-1906] a bus driver and Vera J NEALE [25-6-1909] and Frank JOHNSON [15-7-1927] (perhaps an evacuee). One closed record. Agnes re-married in 1972 to Arthur HAYDEN. His father [26-7-1879] a brick layer; mother [28-12-1881]; brother Ronald N [25-1-196] public service vehicle driver and sister Winifred S [6-10-1919] were at 12 Council Houses, Ness Road, Burwell.

Family sources give the cause of death as from his wounds. Ramleh was used a great deal for burials from the Commonwealth hospitals posted in the area.

One difference may have been noticed, the photographs show George wearing Sergeants chevrons, but his CWGC entry says Corporal. There are several ways this can happen, 1..a typo in the past 2..he may have been demoted 3 and most likely, the CWGC do tend to use the substantive rank, not an acting rank. In some instances, especially aircrew, it appears a man may well have a promotion conferred upon his death in action
